Back-to-School 2024: GCPS schools feature new additions and improvements at the start of the school year

     Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), the largest school system in Georgia, begins the school year in August with renovations and improvements to several existing schools. The additional classrooms and other improvement projects are part of the district’s comprehensive capital program—funded by the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax (E-SPLOST) and General Obligation (G.O.) bonds approved by voters—that provides learning environments focused on the needs of today’s learners. 

Additions/Renovations for the 2024-25 School Year: 

• Additions and Renovation Projects - High school projects completed during the summer included a buildout of GIVE Center West and a cafeteria renovation at Parkview High School. Additionally, projects currently underway for opening in August 2025 are a fourth-floor buildout at Central Gwinnett High School and a three-story classroom addition to Archer High School. 

• STEM/Academy Lab Projects - STEM/Academy lab projects were completed at seven schools over the summer, including the addition of a Marketing Lab at Dacula HS, an Engineering Lab at Five Forks MS, Computer Science and Cybersecurity Labs at Grayson High School’s Grayson Technical Education Program, Healthcare Science Labs at Parkview HS and South Gwinnett HS, and Audio-Visual Technology and Film Labs at Lanier HS and Mountain View HS.  Additionally, prior to the end of the 2023-24 school year, an Engineering Technology lab was constructed at Trickum MS. 

• HVAC Replacements - HVAC systems were replaced in buildings at Brookwood HS, Dacula HS, Dacula MS, Duluth HS, Harmony ES, Nesbit ES, Parkview HS, Peachtree ES, Pinckneyville MS, and Sweetwater MS. 

• Roofing  Replacement - Roofing systems were replaced on buildings at Brookwood ES, Dacula MS, Five Forks MS, Freeman’s Mill ES, GIVE Center East, Harris ES, Hull MS, Jackson ES, Lilburn MS, Mountain Park ES, Norton ES, Partee ES, Phoenix HS and South Gwinnett HS.  

• Interior Classroom Renovations - Renovation work was completed over the summer at Beaver Ridge ES, Centerville ES, Dacula HS, Fort Daniel ES, Grayson ES, Gwin Oaks ES, Harmony ES, Simpson ES, Sugar Hill ES, and Walnut Grove ES. Some examples of the work completed include ceiling grid replacement, classroom lighting, millwork/cabinetry replacements, interior painting, and door and window work. 

• Asphalt Paving - New asphalt paving was completed in parking lots and driveways at seven schools throughout the county – Berkmar MS, Corley ES, Duluth HS, Grayson HS, Lilburn ES, Pinckneyville MS, and Stripling ES.   

In 2024-25, Gwinnett County Public Schools will operate 142 schools. 

• 81 elementary schools (grades K-5)

• 29 middle schools (grades 6-8)

• 24 high schools (grades 9-12), including 20 cluster high schools, Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology; Paul Duke STEM HS; McClure Health Science HS; and Phoenix HS (open campus school, grades 10–12, with a satellite campus at Sugarloaf Mills) 

Other educational facilities: 

• Buice Center, housing ADAPT, STRIVE, and The BRIDGE (special education programs) 

• GIVE Center East (alternative school, grades 6–12) 

• GIVE Center West (alternative school, grades 6–12) 

• Gwinnett Online Campus (online school, grades 4–12) 

• International Transition Center (program at six high school sites— Berkmar, Central Gwinnett, Discovery, Duluth, Meadowcreek, and Norcross) 

• Maxwell HS of Technology (career and technical education school, grades 11 and 12) 

• Oakland Meadow School (special education school) 

• New Life Academy of Excellence (charter school, grades K-8)
