GCPS implementing comprehensive guidance for the ethical use of AI
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is once again taking the lead in establishing ethical guidance for the use of artificial intelligence.
New for the 2024-25 school year, GCPS has updated policies and new guidance for using artificial intelligence (AI) within the district. This initiative builds on the successful AI-Ready pilot launched in 2019 in the Seckinger cluster. This K-12 program integrates components of our AI-Ready Framework into all subjects and grade levels and is designed to prepare students to be responsible and ethical AI users, decision-makers, and developers. The program emphasizes critical and ethical thinking alongside technical skills like programming, data science, and AI tools.
GCPS is expanding learning from the AI-Ready program district-wide, building on the pilot’s success. By incorporating stakeholder feedback and collaborating with partners like Digital Promise and EDSAFE AI Alliance, GCPS has updated existing technology policies and created the GCPS Guidance for Human-Centered AI Use to ensure all students and staff are future-ready. Fundamental principles of the guidance include the belief that AI use should always involve human oversight, fostering inquiry, reflection, insight, and empowerment. AI is seen as a tool to augment and enhance work and learning, with humans remaining central to decision-making processes.
GCPS Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts is proud of the district for taking the lead in establishing ethical guidance for using AI. “An important element of future readiness for the GCPS community is to be responsible, ethical, and critical when leveraging AI tools,” Dr. Watts shares. “Our updated policies and guidance ensure that we are not only preparing our students to use AI effectively but also to use it in a manner that is ethical and human-centered while also establishing clear rules and guidance for GCPS staff. With these updated policies and the new guidance in place, it is clear GCPS is committed to leading the way in AI education, ensuring that our students and staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.”
