Permissive Transfer Process
First Semester of the 2024-25 School Year
The parent or guardian must submit an “Application for Student Transfer” form to the local school principal of the school their child is zoned to attend, requesting reassignment to a school on the “permissive transfer list.” The form is available at the school.
- Prior to applying for a permissive transfer, all students must complete the registration process at their home school (this provides the home school the opportunity to meet the family and student(s) and ensures that the transfer request is being made within the guidelines provided below.)
- Only schools on the GCPS approved Permissive Transfer list can grant transfers.
- All students enrolled under transfers must be recorded by schools through permit codes into the Student Information System.
- Transfer requests should be submitted as early as possible and should not be made later than seven days after the beginning of a semester.
- Student transfers are approved for one year only.
- A student can only receive one transfer per school year.
- Transportation for students (including students of employees) is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.
- Employees of GCPS, who work 20+ hours per week, may enroll their child in a school within the cluster in which they work.
- Employees of GCPS who work at the ISC may enroll their child in a school within the Peachtree Ridge Cluster or a school on the permissive transfer list.
- Employees of GCPS who work at Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC) may enroll their child in a school within the Mountain View Cluster or a school on the permissive transfer list.
- If a student is granted a transfer, there is no guarantee it will be to the requested school.
- If a transfer is requested at the high school level, the student must meet GHSA requirements to participate in competitive interscholastic activities.
- Parking spaces at high schools are not guaranteed.
- Transfer of a student does not include transfer of a sibling.
- Child care hardship transfers are only considered for grades K-5. Child returns to home school feeder pattern in sixth grade.
- Medical/Legal transfers are approved directly through the Office of Academic Support. When approved the transfer is made to a school selected by the Executive Director of Academic Support.
- Once a transfer request has been granted, the receiving school principal, with written notice, may revoke the transfer based on one or more reasons: discipline, excessive absences/tardies, late pick up of student, false information is given on application form or other records, or other just cause.
- Families moving out of their attendance zone (within county) and those moving out of county (after spring break) may remain at the current school for the remainder of school year and will be placed on a Permissive Transfer.
- A denied or revoked permissive transfer can be appealed through the Office of Academic Support by sending an email to permissivetransferappeals@gcpsk12.org.
