Baggett Elementary School's combined drama, chorus, and STEAM clubs produced Dream Box Theatre's Blast Off! The Musical, involving more than 60 students and eight staff members. The show was produced in partnership with Discovery High School and Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST) interns. 

Baggett Elementary School began its collaboration with GSMST last school year as an internship program. As part of the program’s curriculum, five GSMST interns attend Baggett Elementary School three days a week to work alongside students and teachers in the areas of Art, Science, Theatre, and STEAM/CS. Part of their work for the internship included designing digital public relations materials like t-shirts, costumes, and digital projections. They also worked to build sets and to provide backstage support during the production. 

Baggett Elementary School theater teacher, Robin Colwell, reached out to the theater teachers at Discovery High School to book some time on their stage for her students. This ultimately led Discovery’s Technical Director, Travis Smith, to seek support from his theater students to help Baggett Elementary School’s production at Discovery High School. This included 10 students who ran the lighting, sound, projections, and supported the cast backstage in numerous ways. The Discovery High School students also mentored Baggett’s backstage crew, teaching them how to run the lighting and sound boards.  

Baggett Elementary School’s STEAM Club, under the direction of Art teacher Kristyn Lopez and Science teacher Amy Sapp, focused on developing concepts for props, costumes, sets, and digital imaging right at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year. 

The musical production had more than 200 guests in attendance. “This was a culminating event representing a tremendous amount of effort put forth by an incredible team of educators, a dedicated group of volunteer parents, a talented cast and crew, and some fantastic partnerships,” says Baggett’s principal, Mitch Green. “This is a big part of building a supportive community where everyone feels connected, has a place, and truly feels a part of something incredible... It is part of us realizing our vision, to become an innovative STEAM school that promotes an environment in which all students feel a sense of belonging and are inspired to become creative, impactful members of society.”
