When Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) 2021-22 school year begins on August 4, students in need of digital tools at home will have more access.

GCPS has spent nearly $15 million in Federal Stimulus Funding (CARES) to close the need gap by acquiring Chromebooks and hotspots for students who have limited-to-no-internet access. In addition to the computers and internet devices, GCPS also is in the process of renewing service for 14,000 hotspots. The district’s first priority is checking these available devices out to families based on need. Once GCPS has met the needs of students who have demonstrated difficulty accessing the internet, it will expand distribution of available resources to others.

On the district level, GCPS has purchased nearly 130,000 Chromebooks since March of 2020, many of which are earmarked to replace older devices used in our schools. Of the 130,000 purchased, nearly 40,000 are touch-screen Chromebooks that will be used for students in kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. In addition, another 21,500 Chromebooks have been ordered and should be available for use in the fall. As part of its commitment to address the changing needs of its students, GCPS will continue to utilize CARES funding to acquire devices/hot spots to support instructional learning, while also strategically engaging and partnering with local community organizations that can assist in providing devices to families in need.
