Back to School 2021: New additions and construction projects open this school year

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), the largest school system in Georgia, will begin the new school year with several new additions to existing buildings. The additional classrooms and other improvement projects are part of the district’s comprehensive capital program—funded by the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (E-SPLOST) and General Obligation (GO) bonds approved by voters—that provides learning environments focused on the needs of today’s learners.

Additions/Renovations for the 2021-22 School Year:

  • Grayson High School— A new 3-story addition consists of 125,550 square feet and 44 classrooms. It increases the school’s capacity from 2,125 to 3,000 students. Improvements also include the installation of a new fire alarm system, new intercom system, and new generator.
  • Benefield Elementary School — A new two-story addition was added to the school, consisting of 32,617 square feet and 23 classrooms. The addition increases the school’s capacity from 975 to 1,375 students. Renovations include a new fire alarm system and a new generator.
  • Central Gwinnett High School Fine Arts Addition (School of the Arts at Central Gwinnett) — A new Fine Arts addition creates 50,202 square feet of new space that will house the School of the Arts at Central Gwinnett opening this fall. The new addition centrally relocates all the Fine Arts facilities to a new building with a large entrance lobby. In addition, more than 13,400 square feet was renovated, including the existing theater lobby, a broadcast media room, dance studio, and a large extension of the bus canopy.
  • Berkmar High School Theater Addition — A new addition at Berkmar High includes a new theater and a two-story addition totaling 50,788 square feet. This construction project included six new classrooms, the theater, band room, orchestra room, chorus room, dance room and MIDI lab. The existing theater building was renovated resulting in eight new classrooms, an art room and two lecture rooms. The school also received a new fire alarm system, generator, intercom system, and a new roof.
  • High School Academies – Academy projects were completed at Berkmar HS (AVTF Studio/Film Academy and Health Care Science and STEM labs), Central Gwinnett HS (Health Care Science lab and JROTC lab), and Shiloh HS (AVTF Lab)
  • High School Lab Projects – The following lab projects were completed at Brookwood HS (Agriculture lab), Grayson HS (Agriculture Lab and STEM labs), Lanier HS (Health Care Science lab), and Mill Creek HS (Health Care Science and STEM labs)
  • Middle School STEM/Engineering Lab Projects –STEM/Engineering lab projects were completed at Osborne MS, Northbrook MS, and Lanier MS.
  • Artificial Turf— Artificial turf installation in progress at six high schools— Brookwood HS, Shiloh HS, Norcross HS, Archer HS, Mountain View HS, and North Gwinnett HS.
  • Track Surfacing: New track surfaces installed following turf installation at Norcross HS, North Gwinnett HS, and Archer HS.
  • Asphalt Paving— New asphalt paving completed in parking lots and driveways at four schools.
  • HVAC System Replacement— The HVAC systems were replaced with new more energy efficient equipment at four schools.
  • Roofing Replacement— Roofing systems replaced on buildings at three schools.

In 2021-22 Gwinnett County Public Schools will operate 141 schools.

  • 81 elementary schools (grades K–5)
  • 29 middle schools (grades 6–8)
  • 23 high schools (grades 9–12), including 19 cluster high schools, Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology; Paul Duke STEM HS; McClure Health Science HS; and Phoenix HS (open campus school, gr. 10–12, with a satellite campus at Sugarloaf Mills)
  • Other educational facilities:
    • Buice Center, housing ADAPT, STRIVE, and The BRIDGE (special education programs)
    • GIVE Center East (alternative school, gr. 6–12)
    • GIVE Center West (alternative school, gr. 6–12)
    • Gwinnett Online Campus (online school, gr. 4–12)
    • International Transition Center (program at six high school sites— Berkmar, Central Gwinnett, Discovery, Duluth, Meadowcreek, and Norcross)
    • Maxwell HS of Technology (career and technical education school, gr. 11 and 12)
    • Oakland Meadow School (special education school)
    • New Life Academy of Excellence (charter school, gr. K–8)
