Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), the largest school system in Georgia, begins the school year in August with renovations and improvements to several existing schools. The additional classrooms and other improvement projects are part of the district’s comprehensive capital program – funded by the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax (E-SPLOST) and General Obligation (G.O.) bonds approved by voters – that provides learning environments focused on the needs of today’s learners.
Additions/Renovations for the 2023-24 School Year:
- High School and Middle School STEM/Engineering Lab Projects – STEM/Engineering lab projects were completed at McConnell MS, Bay Creek MS, Hull MS, and Snellville MS before the end of the 2023 School Year. Additional STEM/Engineering Lab projects at Duluth HS, North Gwinnett MS, Couch MS, Sweetwater MS, and Trickum MS were completed during the summer.
- Rooftop HVAC Replacements – Using CARES ACT Funds, 53 new Roof Top HVAC units were purchased and installed in 6 schools.
- Energy Recovery Unit (ERU) Replacements – Forty-six replacement ERUs have been purchased using CARES Act Funds. They will be installed in 10 schools, including Collins Hill HS, Dacula MS, Hull MS, Lilburn MS, Magill ES, Mason ES, Meadowcreek HS, Peachtree ES, Shiloh MS, and South Gwinnett HS before the end of December.
- Roofing Replacement – Roofing systems were replaced on buildings at Grayson HS/Grayson Tech, Dacula HS, Meadowcreek ES, and Camp Creek ES.
- Interior Renovations – Renovation work was completed over the summer at Chattahoochee ES, Duluth HS, Meadowcreek HS, Central Gwinnett HS, Mountain Park ES, Bethesda ES, and Arcado ES.
- Asphalt Paving – new asphalt paving was completed in parking lots and driveways at nine schools throughout the county – Simonton ES, Norton ES, Brookwood HS, B.B. Harris ES, Walnut Grove ES, McConnell MS, North Gwinnett HS, Sugar Hill ES, and Shiloh HS.
In 2023-24 Gwinnett County Public Schools will operate 142 schools.
- 81 elementary schools (grades K–5)
- 29 middle schools (grades 6–8)
- 24 high schools (grades 9–12), including 20 cluster high schools, Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology; Paul Duke STEM HS; McClure Health Science HS; Seckinger High School and Phoenix HS (open campus school, grades 10–12, with a satellite campus at Sugarloaf Mills)
