Extremely cold temperatures present challenges for the GCPS school bus fleet, potentially causing a higher rate of mechanical issues on school bus start-up. This can be exacerbated if the cold weather occurs during a period of inactivity for the buses, for example, over a long weekend. The GCPS Transportation and Fleet Maintenance department takes proactive measures to ensure the smooth operation of school buses and the safe and timely delivery of students through the use of its “early start” protocol.
When an “early start” is required, school bus drivers arrive ahead of their usual scheduled start time to crank their buses and ensure they do not have any issues getting started. If issues do occur, the Fleet Maintenance team deploys service trucks to bus lots across the district, enabling mechanics to quickly address any difficulties or issues related to freezing fuel and weakened batteries. An "early start” also involves all hands on deck with additional dispatchers working to handle driver radio activity and transportation supervisors equipped with plans for any contingency, staying agile and deploying break-down drivers wherever needed.
With everyone working together, the GCPS Transportation and Fleet Maintenance department makes it happen for our students, ensuring safe and on-time delivery to school, even in the midst of challenges.
