Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education is getting a boost from two energy companies. Gas South and D.C.-based solar developer Sol Systems have teamed up to contribute nearly $300,000 to GCPS. The funding will provide schools with the ability to develop renewable energy-specific learning tools and resources, train teachers, engage students, and enable schools to work towards becoming STEM certified.
Falicia O’Mard, GCPS K-12 STEM coordinator, is excited about the partnership. “Strengthening K-12 STEM education and fostering interest in renewable energy go hand in hand,” O’Mard shares. “By providing engaging learning experiences, industry collaborations, and inclusive environments, we can help students apply the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) to solve real-world problems. This will not only shape a future-ready workforce but also contribute to a more sustainable and equitable society.”
As technology advances and the demand for sustainable solutions grows, it is imperative to prepare a workforce that is adaptable, innovative, and equipped with the necessary skills for the jobs of tomorrow. In GCPS, this involves providing students with a solid foundation in core STEM disciplines. It also includes applying existing renewable energy AKS to foster an understanding of sustainability and clean energy solutions. This interdisciplinary approach enables students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills vital in STEM and renewable energy careers.
KidWind, an international leader in clean energy education, will work closely with GCPS to enhance the learning experience and promote hands-on learning opportunities for students, including project-based learning, internships, and partnerships with industry professionals. These opportunities allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, gain practical skills, and develop a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in STEM and renewable energy sectors.
