In its Fall 2022 issue, DIVERSITY in Ed Magazine recently highlighted GCPS’ efforts for ensuring that diversity is at the center of the school district’s recruitment and retention practices. DIVERSITY in Ed’s hope is to shine a light on some of the efforts happening around the country to center diversity – and improve schools and districts in the process.
Patrice Pendergast, GCPS’ director of Recruitment and Retention, emphasized that to ensure GCPS is meeting the community’s needs, the school district engages in nearly 100 recruiting events each year at HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and diverse local colleges. Additionally, GCPS hosts a yearly Teacher Signing Day featuring GCPS students who sign letters of intent to come back to GCPS in four years to teach. “We are proud of the current diversity represented by our student population – 33% Hispanic, 32% Black, 20% white, 11% Asian, 4% other. DIVERSITY in Ed is a minority owned teacher recruitment business established in 2005. Its mission is to connect schools, districts and higher-ed institutions with teachers of color and diverse languages, cultures and backgrounds to reflect their student body.
DIVERSITY in Ed Magazine is distributed electronically to more than 1,000 universities and colleges nationwide on a biannual basis (Fall-October and Spring-March). While in print, more than 25,000 copies were distributed on a controlled request basis (free) to more than 500 HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions and U.S. News and World Report’s (listed) Top Colleges/Universities through the education departments and career service offices. The magazine was also distributed at various career fairs and conferences to members of professional teaching organizations.
