Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts announced today that applications are now available for students wishing to serve on the 2022-23 Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council. This is Year Two of the Student Advisory Council, a unique opportunity for middle and high school students to share with Superintendent Watts their feedback, experiences, and perspectives on various issues affecting students, schools, and communities. Dr. Watts formed the inaugural council during his first year as superintendent.
Dr. Watts is excited to relaunch the advisory council this year. “The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council is one of the ways I can meet and learn from our students across the county. Through this Council, our students can voice their ideas, share suggestions for improving our schools and our district, act as thought partners as they connect with fellow students, and build their leadership capacity alongside students with whom they may not otherwise have collaborated.”
Potential applicants for the Student Advisory Council are students who are concerned about the needs of all students and have a desire to ensure GCPS is focused on improvement for each and every student. In addition, Dr. Watts is seeking students who will express views and opinions honestly, openly, constructively, and respectfully; who work collaboratively with others; and who have a willingness to offer suggestions, innovative solutions, and their input on areas for improvement in a wide range of topics facing our schools. Students who served on the council last year are encouraged to apply.
The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council will meet four times during the year:
Students will find the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council application in the Student Portal. The application includes questions about their interest in serving, ideas for improving the school experience for students, and challenges facing students and schools. In addition, the application outlines the expectations for those wishing to serve.
The deadline to complete the application is Wednesday, August 31, 2022. All students selected to serve on the Council will be notified by Friday, September 9, 2022.
