GCPS student artists earn National Art and Writing awards

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) high school art students earned 119 awards through the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers’ Scholastic Art & Writing Awards recognition program. These awards recognize student visual and literary arts achievements in 28 categories: painting, novel writing, mixed media, poetry, digital art, journalism, and beyond. An award signifies to parents, teachers, the community, and colleges that a student is an accomplished artist or writer. GCPS students earned 61 Gold Key Awards and 58 Silver Key Awards.

David DuBose, GCPS Director of Fine Arts, is proud of the district’s students and their teachers. “Our educators’ dedication shines through in our students’ achievements,” DuBose shares. “These accolades highlight the unwavering commitment of our teachers and schools to deliver top-tier visual arts education to every student. The development of creativity and visual arts skills starts for every child in GCPS in elementary school, fostering a strong foundation that paves the way for remarkable achievements at higher levels. The success of our high school students in national competitions reflects the quality and depth of our arts education program.”

Each work of art and writing is selected for awards without knowledge of the student’s gender, age, ethnicity, or hometown. First locally through the more than 100 affiliates of the Alliance and then nationally by panels of judges comprised of renowned artists, authors, educators, and industry experts, jurors look for works that exemplify the Awards’ core values: originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Awards give students opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Since the program’s founding in 1923, the Awards have fostered the creativity and talent of millions of students, including renowned alumni who have gone on to become leaders in their fields, including Ken Burns, Derek Fordjour, José Parlá, Kay Walkingstick, Sylvia Plath, Andy Warhol, Charles White, Amanda Gorman, Tschabalala Self, Joyce Carol Oates, and Tracy Reese.
