Some students from Gwinnett County Public Schools’ Lanier Cluster met with government officials from the City of Sugar Hill recently to share their thoughts about the future. The visit was part of the city’s Envision 100 initiative, a component of Sugar Hill's 2039 Comprehensive Plan, its long-range plan for future growth.
Approximately 50 students from Sugar Hill, Sycamore, and White Oak Elementary Schools participated in the event. They walked from Sugar Hill Elementary to the Eagle Theatre in downtown Sugar Hill, where they engaged in a constructive feedback session alongside city planning and government officials. The students were asked to provide their perspectives on what they envision the city will be like in 2039.
Lanier Cluster Superintendent Clifton Alexander says, “It was amazing to see students learning about the rich history of Sugar Hill while eagerly embracing the opportunity to voice their visions for future enhancements.” City officials provided an overview of ongoing city projects before the students took a tour of downtown Sugar Hill and participated in feedback sessions with their peers. “The City of Sugar Hill is a special place that values the input of future generations,” Mr. Alexander shares. “This day of learning and leading allowed Lanier cluster students to walk away knowing they play a critical role in creating a vibrant Sugar Hill community where they can learn, live, and play.” The visit concluded with a picnic at the scenic bowl area and a treat at Scoops ice cream shop.
Envision 100 serves as a community engagement effort to imagine what the city will look like on its 100th birthday in 2039. The plan's update will unfold over the coming months, with an anticipated completion date in February 2024.
