On Sunday, November 13, at 2 p.m., the Gwinnett County Board of Education and Gwinnett County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts will join students, faculty, and community members as they officially dedicate Seckinger High School; the nation’s first Artificial Intelligence themed high school. Seckinger high, which opened in August, serves more than 1,500 students in grades 9-12 and is a next-generation high school that offers innovative learning opportunities and preparation for the fast-paced environments of the future. Students are able to choose areas of focus within schools of study that focus on the humanities, international business, and advanced sciences and technology (with a focus on artificial intelligence, also called AI).

The formal program begins at 2 p.m., followed by a reception and tours of the school. In addition to remarks from Principal Memorie Reesman, the program includes District II Board of Education Member Steve B. Knudsen, GCPS Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instructional Support and Innovation, Dr. Babak Mostaghimi; the school’s namesake, Daniel D. Seckinger; and our Superintendent, Dr. Watts. The ceremony will incorporate Seckinger High students and a performance by the Seckinger High School Mastery Ensemble.

In addition to celebrating the opening of the new school, the day stands as a tribute to one of the longest-serving members of the Gwinnett County Board of Education, Daniel D. Seckinger. In 1995, Mr. Seckinger was elected to District II and served 24 consecutive years. He was elected chairman of the School Board five times, including in 2010, when the school district won The Broad Prize for Urban Education for the first time. Mr. Seckinger is a recipient of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce’s “Public Service Award” and the Northeast Georgia Council Boy Scouts of America’s “Distinguished Citizen Award”. 

In November of 2020, the Gwinnett County Board of Education approved the reassignment of select elementary school attendance zones beginning in August 2022 to create the Seckinger Cluster.  Approved changes by the board included reassigning the Harmony, Ivy Creek, and Patrick elementary school attendance zones to align with Jones Middle School and the new Seckinger High School. As of October 2022, Seckinger High School is home to 1,029 GCPS students.
