More than 65 LEGO® structures were unveiled on Wednesday, March 22 at Jones Middle School. The A-Town Lego® City community service project was executed by 550 7th grade students across 21 homerooms, and led by Principal Lin Thornton and Artificial Intelligence Instructional Specialist, Olivia Hyun.
The purpose of the A-Town LEGO® City community service project was to introduce students to the world of development, architecture, and construction with a focus on how artificial intelligence and advanced technologies are embedded in the field. The children experienced roles as the general contractor, project manager, construction manager, scheduler, and more.
For the past six weeks, students worked together during their homeroom time to bring their LEGO® projects to life. They were even given construction documents, as an actual project team would. At the end of the project, representatives from Panattoni Development Company and Alston Construction Company hosted an assembly to reveal the final city and take students on a virtual tour of the Target construction site.
The community service project was sponsored by The Panattoni Development Company, Alston Construction Company, and Ware Malcomb Architects in partnership with their client, Target Corporation, who are building a 1.4M SF warehouse/distribution center in Hampton, Ga.
The A-Town LEGO® City provided the students the following perspectives into the industry:
- Creative problem-solving which included design thinking, creativity, and collaborative leadership
- Applied experiences: Robotics
- Ethics: Decision-making, Bias, and Principles of Philosophy
- Data Science: Modeling and Visualization
- Mathematical Reasoning: Computational Thinking
- Programming: Logical Reasoning
