Seckinger High School is one of 50 High Schools selected to host the Presidential Academy for Teachers and Congressional Academy for Students program. The Academies Program supports the establishment of Presidential Academies for the Teaching of American History and Civics that offer workshops for veteran and new teachers to strengthen their knowledge of American history, civics, and government education. The Congressional Academies for Students of American History and Civics provides high school students with opportunities to enrich their understanding of these subjects.

Seckinger High School Principal Memorie Reeseman says, “We anticipate that this program will profoundly impact our students' civic dispositions, including heightened political interest and attention, increased participation in political discussions, a stronger commitment to community engagement, and a greater sense of civic duty.”  GCPS Director of Social Studies, 6-12 Shirelle D. Tubbs agrees, “The program will enrich the civic education landscape, empowering teachers and students to delve deeper into American history and government,” she says.

Each school must have strong administrative support, a willing teacher to lead a student civic organization and support the Government and Public Administration Pathway, and a group of three students in grades 10-11.

The grant covers all costs for teachers and students, with schools responsible for substitute teacher expenses (four days – two in November and two in January) and transportation to the Youth Assembly and teacher mini-workshop.
