The North Gwinnett High School Girls Swim and Dive team earned Georgia High School Association’s Swimming and Diving 7A State Championship for the first time. North Gwinnett High School Head Swim and Dive Coach Paul Callis says, “We've had lots of great swimmers come through North Gwinnett in the past, and our team felt the pressure to be the first girls' team to win a title here at North. After losing to Brookwood in both our dual meet and again at the county meet, the girls never stopped believing in themselves and our potential to put together a total team performance. They knew the state meet was another chance to swim fast and they were very committed to competing with great team effort. We started the meet by winning the 200 Medley from an outside lane and then we never looked back. The girls dominated the state meet from start to finish, scoring the most points ever, and left no doubt to who was the best team in the state this year.”
GCPS Director of Athletics Jason Holcolmbe says, “We are extremely honored that the North Gwinnett Girls Swim and Dive team was able to accomplish a state championship in their sport. This is the first team in their school history to win a state championship in their sport. To win a state championship at any level is the dream of every athlete and coach. While the commitment and endless hours of training and work put in by athletes and coaches does not guarantee victory nor the opportunity to win a championship, we applaud the effort, determination, and dedication to their craft. It is commendable and they were recognized for their determination. This is a proud moment for the school and for GCPS.”
