Some 12th-grade Paul Duke STEM High School Audio-Visual students showcased their talent and dedication by earning top honors at the 2024 National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) (Southeast Region) Student Production Awards banquet.
Jaiden Clark placed first in the Animation/Graphics/Special Effects category for his outstanding work on Paul Duke STEM High’s television show PDS-TV. Student producers Aero Bingham, Abigail Donkor, Jaiden Clark, and Landon Shell also claimed first place in the Non-Fiction—Long Form category for their project Making: She Kills Monsters. The school was also honored with a crystal pillar for each winning project.
“I would like to say how proud I am of our students and their teacher, Mr. Skelton,” says Paul Duke STEM High School Principal Dr. Jonathon Wetherington. “These students invested considerable time into their projects, and I am excited that their commitment, skills, and efforts are being recognized.”
The NATAS Student Production Awards recognize outstanding student achievement in video production. The presentation of these awards is intended to encourage the continued pursuit of excellence by those studying media and journalism and to focus public attention on outstanding cultural, educational, technological, entertainment, news, and informational achievements by undergraduate college and/or high school students.
In referencing the Making: She Kills Monsters project, Paul Duke STEM High’s Audio, Video Technology, and Film Teacher Brooke Skelton shares, “This was an authentic project similar to what they would do in the real world. They constantly had to problem-solve, communicate effectively, and work as a team. They also learned the importance of compromising, listening to each other’s opinions, and meeting deadlines.”
As regional winners, the Paul Duke STEM High students will advance to the National Student Production Awards competition, the results of which will be announced later this year.
